After Nepal was admitted to UNESCO on 1 May 1953 a Nepal Interim National Commission for UNESCO was setup under the Chairmanship of the then Minister for Education on the 26th July 1954. The system of making the Education Secretary as the officious Secretary General of the Nepal National Commission for UNESCO demonstrates Nepal’s Commitment to UNESCO. The following are the objectives of the Nepal National Commission for UNESCO, which are manifested in its Constitution 1974 (amendment):
- To promote the economic social and intellectual development of the Nepalese People through educational, scientific and cultural activities.
- To hold or to encourage to hold seminars, talk programmes, conferences and to promote study and research in the field of education, culture, science, mass communication and social service sectors.
- To introduce Nepal’s glorious culture through UNESCO to the world community .
- To disseminate and publicize UNESCO objectives and programmes to a wider audience.
- To extend co-operation to the programmes conducted by UNESCO at the regional and international levels.
- To provide support for the implementation of the national as well as regional projects and programmes conducted in co – operation with UNESCO.
The UNESCO Constitution provides the overarching framework to structure the Nepal National Commission for UNESCO.
According to the Constitution the structure or the frame of NATCOM comprises the following:
I. Commission
II. Executive Committee, Subject Committees and Special Committees
III. Secretariat
